Fantastically Funny Friday (6/10/2011) – Julia Sweeney “Sex Ed” Monologue

Happy Friday!

A friend of mine emailed me this video earlier this week.  While I see funny videos on the web all the time, I can’t remember the last time I laughed this hard for 10 minutes straight.

I’m dreading the day that I have to have the ‘birds and the bees’ conversation with my kids.  If my kids are as curious as Julia’s, that means I only have another 4 years…

When do you plan to have the ‘birds and the bees’ conversation with your child(ren)?  Will you initiate the conversation or let them bring it up to you?

NOTE:  Please do not watch this video around children, or you might find yourself having the ‘birds and the bees’ conversation - today.  :)

  • That was hilarious!
I’ve always been very honest with my daughter. She was 3 during mypregnancy and asked lot of questions. She knows all of the puzzle pieces of “baby making” but hasn’t yet figured out the whole puzzle. I grew up in a very open home and questions were welcomed and answered honestly. I’m pretty sure I knew most of the details of sex by the time I was 6. If we ever have another baby, I know there will be more questions and I’ll answer them just like usual. :-0

    • You are a great example for me to follow, Talia! I’ve always taught my daughters the real names of their female anatomy, but so far my 3 year old hasn’t asked me any questions about where babies come from. I know it’s coming, and plan to be honest and open about that too, but I know it’s probably going to be a lot harder once the time comes, lol. I love how Julia’s daughter feels close enough to her mom to ask her the questions, instead of going to her 8 year old friends. I would love for my kids to do the same because they know they’ll get the truth from me. :)

  • I love to hear that children are learning these facts as early as six. I practiced this 15 years ago, when it was considered scandalous, by some. Who better to learn the truth from than the child’s parent? (Singular for a reason, just TRY to get dad involved.. not so easy) I was very careful to caution my children not to talk about our discussions with others and bring any questions back home to be explored, explaining to them the boundaries of privacy. Thanks for sharing the video!

    • Diane, you were such a great mama and ahead of the times! I know what you mean about dad’s involvement. There have been several recent discussions and/or exploration by my 3 year old (during bath time, etc.) that has sent my husband yelling for me to take over and running out of the bathroom. ;) Glad you enjoyed the video! :)

  • This was so funny! Thanks for sharing! I only have one child–a daughter who is now 22. I just remember doing much the same as Diane: answering questions as they arose, cautioning her not to talk about it publicly (especially important her in the Deep South.) I am happy to say that my child is very comfortable with herself and her sexuality and she doesn’t view it as something shameful.

    • Sara, I love hearing from moms with children in their 20s, and what you did with your children to promote their healthy view of their sexuality in adulthood! Us moms with young babies, and many years of figuring it all out ahead, have so much to learn from you! :) Thank you for sharing your experiences with your daughter!
