Thanks, Kristen! When we were going through this experience, we were clueless, which is a tough place to be. In fact, I had initially told M that he didn't need to come to the hospital with me. I didn't realize that someone would need to sit next to the baby all night long (no idea that she'd mess with her goggles). Just hoping that this article will better prepare other new/expecting moms. :)

Thanks, Cheryl! I was cracking up about your mom's insistence that your near-sightedness is linked to your jaundice. I'm near-sighted, too, but wasn't jaundiced when I was born. She is a dream of a baby - sleeping 5 hours at night already (thank goodness!) and this child does not cry?!? She's a grunter. :)

I'm so glad that M is fine and jaundice-free! As I'm reading your article, lots of memories have returned to me. My son Samuel also had jaundice. He was placed under photo-therapy in NICU and had heel picks few times a day. I know how exactly you feel (felt). About foot warmer, if anyone can't find a lab nearby that has it, our nurse told us a trick. That is to wrap up the tiny foot with a diaper, it'll warm the little foot. But I hope no one ever has to use this tip. All the best!

Heather, so glad that you wrote about this topic. I don't think expectant mothers hear enough about this and know what the road ahead looks like when they experience it. So thankful that you guys made it over this hurdle and are wiser for it. You are an amazing mom!

So glad to know M is doing well. Nearly 38 years ago, treatment for jaundice wasn't as flexible--my mother was devastated to know that I had to stay behind at U of C for a week for double/triple. She nearly lost her mind because she had to be discharged. There was no medical reason for her to stay, and back then she couldn't stay overnight. On top of that, my goggles kept falling off my face, just like M. To this day, she insists this is the reason for my near-sightedness. Even though her whole family is near-sighted and she should know better as a biochemistry professor. Heh. :)

More beauty and love in the world, Heather! Congratulations again!

I'm so glad that M's ordeal with jaundice came to a close swiftly and successfully. I didn't have to deal with jaundice for any of my 3 kids. My sister Jeni had an awful jaundice experience with her first son. Compounded by being born 3 weeks early and the fact that he refused to eat for almost 3 days, Nicholas became severely jaundiced. He wasn't released from the hospital until he was a week old. My poor sister was in tears when she was discharged to leave but couldn't take her son home with her. Fortunately, the bilirubin blanket and therapy did the trick. By the end of the first week, he was given a clean bill of health and released. He's a healthy, vibrant 7-year-old boy today. :)
