I didn't realize that someone would need to sit next to the baby all night long (no idea that she'd mess with her goggles). As I'm reading your article, lots of memories have returned to me. My son Samuel also had jaundice. He was placed under photo-therapy in NICU and had heel picks few times a day. I know how exactly you feel (felt). About foot warmer, if anyone can't find a lab nearby that has it, our nurse told us a trick. Nearly 38 years ago, treatment for jaundice wasn't as flexible--my mother was devastated to know that I had to stay behind at U of C for a week for double/triple. She nearly lost her mind because she had to be discharged. There was no medical reason for her to stay, and back then she couldn't stay overnight. On top of that, my goggles kept falling off my face, just like M. To this day, she insists this is the reason for my near-sightedness. I didn't have to deal with jaundice for any of my 3 kids. My sister Jeni had an awful jaundice experience with her first son. Compounded by being born 3 weeks early and the fact that he refused to eat for almost 3 days, Nicholas became severely jaundiced. He wasn't released from the hospital until he was a week old. My poor sister was in tears when she was discharged to leave but couldn't take her son home with her. Fortunately, the bilirubin blanket and therapy did the trick. By the end of the first week, he was given a clean bill of health and released.
