My Summer Bucket List

My recent hiatus from blogging has given me some time to think as I’ve refocused my attention on my family, myself, and others. I think it all started about 3 months ago with a badly-sprained ankle.

It was pure clumsiness on my part. I came home that evening from work unable to walk and in desperation as I wondered what I would do with my husband leaving town the next morning for a week-long business trip.

It was incredibly humbling. It was one of the first times I reached out to friends and neighbors and asked for help. As I was crawling across my kitchen floor on my hands and knees just to get to the bathroom, I knew I couldn’t do it on my own.

It started with a request for crutches on our neighborhood freecycle group on Facebook. And by evening’s end, I had crutches, an ankle boot, and meals volunteered from friends and neighbors, some of whom I’d never met before. Other close friends came to my home in the morning to help me dress my kids and drive them to and from daycare and shuttle me to dr’s appointments.

I couldn’t believe that people were so willing to help, especially when I felt like for so long I’ve been immersed in my own little world doing little for others because I just didn’t know how I could find any more time in the day.

So now I’m making the time – for more quality time with my family, to take care of myself, and to do more for others. Rather than rush to my computer at the first opportunity, I’m spending more time with my girls reading Dr Seuss and singing lullabies at bedtime, going on dates with my dear husband, taking meals to sick friends, washing my face and getting to sleep at night.

I apologize that this means less time for PureBebe, but I hope that you understand. I don’t want to look back on these years with guilt knowing I could have been more present.

And so I’ve vowed that this summer, I am going to continue re-focusing my attention and re-balancing my life. And I think what better way to do so than with a summer bucket list. I’ve seen these floating around Pinterest and blogs I follow lately, and I’ve been inspired.

My bucket list is not a to do list, though, but an idea list. I won’t expect to do all of these, but these are among the things I could and would love to do with my family. I will definitely make time for some of them.

In fact, just last week, I took a day off of work and took my girls to our local farm for U-pick strawberries. We had the most wonderful time. We spent the morning picking and eating strawberries and the afternoon feeding baby animals, climbing on playgrounds, and drinking slushies in the sun. We were sad to see the day come to an end, but I hope to take them back again soon. So this tops our bucket list.

  1. Visit our local farm and pick fruits and vegetables – Check!
  2. Make homemade ice cream – Check! Stay tuned for my recipe.
  3. Frequent the farmer’s market.
  4. Try my hand at canning & preserving.
  5. Buy a popsicle mold, and make our own popsicles.
  6. Camp out in the backyard. Roast smores over the campfire.
  7. Hand-written thank you notes to all those who have helped me with my injury.
  8. Go for a picnic.
  9. Play in the rain or run through the sprinklers.
  10. Host a playdate for my girls and their best friends.
  11. Host a BBQ for family friends.
  12. Take a few lessons from my hubby, and learn to use our smoker.
  13. Visit the Washington DC National Zoo.
  14. See the space shuttle Discovery at the National Air & Space Museum – we saw it fly right over our house and were in awe!
  15. Fly a kite at the Washington Monument.
  16. Ride in the paddle boats at the Tidal Basin.
  17. Decorate our driveway with sidewalk chalk.
  18. Catch fireflies late at night – a fond memory I have from my own childhood.
  19. Plan and do random acts of kindness for others.
  20. Spend a whole day in our pajamas.
What’s on your bucket list? I’m taking my list to Pinterest to add to my ideas there. If you have a bucket list you’d like to share, leave a comment below!

Got Cabin Fever? Activities for the Last Few Weeks of Winter…

I’ve been working the part-time schedule now for a few months. My kids are home with me two days during the week and in school the other three days. With the exception of one day when my 1 year old had a fever, I have planned outings for my kids during every “home” day thus far. It took me a while to find activities to do with them, but I have enjoyed mixing “free” activities with paid activities. As you all know, a physically and/or mentally exhausted child means a healthy afternoon nap and a very thankful mama (or papa)! Below is my go-to list of things to do to keep my babies active.

Public Library Storytelling
All of our local public libraries host ‘storytelling’ times for children. They usually have multiple back-to-back sessions and group them by the age of the child. Although my kids insisted on eating the entire time we were at the library (I think I’ve conditioned them, Pavlov Dog style, to eat whenever we’re out), they enjoyed the outing.

Free Local Entertainment
Our local mall brings in children’s entertainment (a kid’s band) once a week for an hour. We try to go every week and then eat lunch at the mall afterwards with friends. My kids love dancing to the music.

Last week they brought in a different performer, who incorporated science/lab projects into the entertainment. It was a different spin on the usual routine, but the kids thought the puffs of “smoke” (the entertainers made sure to mention that the powder was non-toxic) in the air were quite thrilling.

We also have an indoor train that the kids love to ride, as well as a carousel, in our mall. If I’m out of ideas, we go for a few rides on the train and/or carousel.

Local Park
Yesterday morning my husband mentioned that the temperature outside was warmer than usual. So I bundled up the kids and headed to the park to meet a friend and her son. We weren’t ten feet out the door when I realized that our trip to the park was going to be frrreeezing. After a quick 20 minute play date, we were ready to call it quits and head straight home for hot chocolate.

My kids still took a 3 hour nap in the afternoon. ;)

Sports Bounce
I signed up for a half-price punch card to our local sports bounce during the last Groupon / LivingSocial offering. Our Sports Bounce is a warehouse full of moon bounces and other activities that allow our little ones to bounce their energy away.

Me being a total goofball at a local sports bounce (during a birthday party).

Ice Skating
Although I haven’t yet ventured to our local ice skating rink, several of my friends have taken their kids ice skating this year and have enjoyed it. Because my second daughter isn’t old enough to skate, I don’t think I can handle taking both of them to the rink myself. This would be a wonderful weekend activity to do as a family.

Swim Lessons
I just found out that my 3 year old is old enough to sign up for group swim lessons without mom and/or dad in the water. I plan to sign her up for ‘beginner’ lessons twice a week for 30 minutes. I would love for her to learn some survival skills (i.e. how to hold her breath under water) so that I can try to manage both kids by myself at the pool this summer.

Gymnastics
I have taken my daughter to open gymnastics classes and she loves them. Unfortunately, the Little Gyms and the likes in our area are very expensive ($400 + a $40 membership fee/semester per child) and not in my part-time working budget. ;) However, I’m sure if I did more research I could find a lower-cost alternative at a local recreation center.

Arts and Crafts
We’ve been blogging about arts and crafts that we’ve done over the past few months, but one of the activities that both of my girls love to do besides coloring is “paint” with watercolors. This activity usually gives me enough time to prep and start cooking dinner or clean up after breakfast.

I usually tape a coloring page to the table for both girls and give my 3 year old watercolor paints, a paintbrush and water. My 1 year old gets a paintbrush and water. She hasn’t realized that when she “paints,” it’s only with water. Even though the watercolors are non-toxic, I still don’t want her putting them in her mouth.

What activities do you do with your little ones to keep them physically and/or mentally stimulated?

6 Valentine’s Day Activities To Do With Your Little One

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we have been busy thinking about activities to do with our young toddlers. Many of us will be stuck in the house with little ones today due to the snow storm, so we hope that these activities provide you with some fun ideas.

1) Print out free Valentine coloring pages for the kids to color and/or paint
Here are a few fun pictures to print out: Valentine’s Day coloring pages

2) Make homemade Valentine’s cards
Here are a few examples of my favorites.

3) Make a Valentine’s Day card holder
Here are step-by-step instructions to make a simple hanging card holder.

4) Bake Valentine’s Day cookies

5) Make Valentine’s Day chocolate lolli-pops
My 3 year old and I made chocolate lolli-pops for both her and her sister’s friends at school last holiday season and plan to make more to give to their friends this Valentine’s day.

6) If you don’t feel like making homemade Valentine’s Day cards, order photo cards to mail to friends and/or family
Many online photo shops run specials this time of year. And if you really wanted to send out 2010 Holiday cards and never got around to it (like me last year), this is a great way to let your family and friends know that you’re thinking of them in the new year.

Rainy Day Activities for Your Toddler

I was going to save this post for a rainy day, but since all of these activities (with the exception of the first) could apply to those of us stuck inside due to the extreme heat outside (100+ degrees for the past few days), I thought I’d go ahead and post.

Please leave me a Comment below if you have ideas of activities to do with your little ones – would love to hear them!

Playing in the Rain Puddles - Courtesty of A.D. Miller on Flickr

1 – Splash around outside. Put rain boots on your kidlet, go outside and splash around in the puddles (of course, only if there’s no lightening/thunder outside).

About a year ago, I witnessed a dad outside in the rain with his toddler daughter. They were in the middle of a quiet street (without any cars around) splashing through the puddles. His daughter had on a pair of rain boots and was having the time of her life. I remember wishing that I had a camera to capture the look of joy on that little girl’s face.

I bought my daughter her first pair of rain boots the following weekend.

2 – Paint with pudding (whipped cream optional).
Chocolate, vanilla, whatever flavor floats your child’s boat. Put some wax paper down on the table, the pudding and whipped cream on top of that and let your child play with his edible paint!

3 – Create edible playdough.
1 c flour
1/3 c salt
½ c water (or more if needed)
2-3 drops food coloring

Mix the flour and salt together. Slowly add the water and food coloring. Knead well. This dough can be stored in an airtight canister for approximately 1 month.

4 – Play a game.
My two year old loves to play games. We often pull out a deck of UNO cards and transform the game into “matching colors.” I lay out a card with each of the four colors and let her match up the rest of the deck with the right colors. She loves to tell me what color and number are on the cards, both in English and in Spanish.

Other toddler favorites are “hide and seek,” tic-tac-toe (GREAT for when we need to be quiet), or chase (my husband “chases” my daughter around an open room).

5 – Build something (i.e. Legos).
We have a box of larger-sized Legos Duplo that we pull out on rainy days. We build castles, tractors, homes and anything else that moves my 2 year old’s imagination.

6 – Bake.

Cupcakes, cookies, bread – it really doesn’t matter what goodies you bake, your child will love to help in the kitchen. And, they will be the first in line for a taste test! I let my two year old stand on a step stool so that she can reach the bowl to stir.

7 – Dance.
When my firstborn was 1 year old, the only music she would jive to was Pussycat Dolls. Fortunately her musical preferences have since evolved and she’s much more tolerant of different kinds of music (‘Buttons’ gets really old after a while!).

So we have dance parties – in the family room. I crank up the music and we all dance around. And the best part? There’s no cost for admission. :)
